The L 99 Jaw Coupling (often labeled as L099) is a robust, fail-safe flexible coupling designed for medium to heavy-duty industrial power transmission. It is specifically used when the application requires higher torque and larger shaft diameters than the L 95 can accommodate. It consists of two interlocking hubs—usually made of high-grade Cast Iron—and a central elastomeric spider that cushions the drive system.
The L 99 model offers a significant jump in power capacity. Ratings vary by the spider material selected:
| Specification | Synthetic Rubber (NBR) | Polyurethane | H-Trans / Hytrel |
| Rated Torque (Nm) | 46.40 | 69.6 | 116 |
| Power @ 100 rpm (kW) | 0.49 | 0.73 | 1.2 |
| Power @ 1500 rpm (kW) | 7.35 | 10.95 | 18.0 |
Outside Diameter (ØA): 65 mm
Max Bore (D): 30 mm
Overall Length (TL1): 72 mm
Hub Diameter (ØB): 51 mm
Length thru' Bore (L1): 27 mm
Gap (G): 2 mm
The L 99 operates on the principle of load-bearing in compression. The driving hub’s jaws press against the legs of the elastomeric spider, which then transfers the force to the driven hub.
Shock Absorption: The spider acts as a damper for sudden torque spikes or "hammering" from the load.
Misalignment Support: The flexible material allows the coupling to operate smoothly even if the two shafts are slightly out of line (angular or parallel misalignment).
Safe Failure: If the spider is overloaded and shears off, the metal jaws will meet and continue to turn the shaft, preventing immediate total machine failure.
Higher Torque Density: Provides nearly double the torque capacity of the L 95 while only increasing the outside diameter by 11 mm.
Cast Iron Construction: At this size, hubs are typically cast iron, providing excellent strength and durability for harsh environments.
Low Maintenance: Like all jaw couplings, it requires no lubrication.
Spider Interchangeability: The L 99 often shares the same spider size as the L 100, making spare parts easier to source.
Energy Efficient: Smooth transmission reduces energy loss through heat and friction.
The L 99 is widely used in high-torque industrial machinery, including:
Heavy-Duty Pumps: Slurry pumps and high-pressure water systems.
Gearbox Inputs: Connecting high-speed motors to industrial gear reducers.
Compressors: Screw and piston-type air compressors.
Conveyors: Heavy-duty belt drives in mining or manufacturing.
Generators: Connecting diesel or gas engines to small and mid-sized power generators.
The L 99 is the ideal choice for applications requiring a 30 mm maximum bore and torque up to 116 Nm. It is a heavy-duty, reliable "standard" in the industry that bridges the gap between smaller utility couplings and large industrial drive systems. Its ability to use H-Trans spiders allows it to handle heavy shock loads that would destroy smaller models.
