The L 280 Jaw Coupling is one of the largest and most robust models in the L-Series family. It is a heavy-duty, torsionally flexible coupling specifically designed for massive industrial drives. Constructed from high-strength Cast Iron, the L 280 is engineered to bridge the gap between standard mechanical couplings and heavy-duty industrial power transmission systems. Its primary role is to transmit high torque while protecting heavy machinery from the destructive effects of torsional vibration and shock loads.
The L 280 is designed for high-horsepower applications. Its performance is maximized when paired with high-performance spider materials like H-Trans:
| Specification | Synthetic Rubber (NBR) | Polyurethane (PU) | H-Trans / Hytrel |
| Rated Torque (Nm) | 715.0 | 1072.5 | 1787.5 |

Outside Diameter (ØA): 190 mm (approx. 7.48")
Max Bore (D): 80 mm (approx. 3.15")
Overall Length (TL1): 210 mm
Hub Diameter (ØB): 150 mm
Length thru' Bore (L1): 82 mm
Gap (G): 4.5 mm
Shaft Integration: Two heavy cast iron hubs are mounted onto the drive and driven shafts, typically using deep-seated keyways to handle the high torque.
Compression Drive: Unlike other couplings that rely on shear, the L 280 works in compression. The jaws of the driving hub push against the arms of the elastomeric spider, which transfers the energy to the driven hub.
Damping & Alignment: The thick spider insert absorbs high-frequency vibrations and compensates for angular misalignment (up to 1°) and parallel misalignment (up to 0.5 mm).
Safety Interface: The "fail-safe" jaw design ensures that if the spider fails under extreme environmental stress, the metal jaws will interlock, allowing the machine to continue operating safely until a scheduled maintenance window.
Massive Torque Capacity: Capable of handling nearly 1,800 Nm of torque, making it suitable for large-scale industrial motors and diesel engines.
Large Bore Accommodation: The 80 mm maximum bore is designed to fit the large-diameter shafts found on heavy-duty pumps, gearboxes, and crushers.
Torsional Shock Absorption: The large volume of elastomeric material in the spider provides superior cushioning for high-inertia start-ups.
Zero Maintenance: Requires no lubrication or grease, which is critical in heavy industries like mining or cement production where dust would contaminate lubricants.
High Durability: The cast iron hubs offer excellent thermal stability and resistance to wear in harsh, abrasive environments.
The L 280 is a standard component in "critical-path" industrial machinery:
Mining & Heavy Processing: Used in large primary crushers, ball mills, and massive conveyor drives.
Oil & Gas: High-capacity mud pumps and large-scale centrifugal compressors.
Marine & Energy: Connecting auxiliary diesel engines to large generators or propulsion systems.
Water & Wastewater: High-volume municipal water pumps and aeration systems.
Steel & Paper Mills: Main drive couplings for rollers and heavy-duty industrial fans.
The L 280 is a powerhouse coupling designed for the most demanding industrial environments. With an Outside Diameter of 190 mm and a Torque capacity up to 1787.5 Nm, it provides the strength and reliability needed for large-scale operations. Its "fail-safe" design and maintenance-free nature make it the preferred choice for engineers who prioritize system uptime and equipment protection.
