The L 276 Jaw Coupling (often designated as L276) is the "big brother" of the heavy-duty L-series family. It is a torsionally flexible, fail-safe coupling designed for high-power industrial drive systems. Manufactured from high-grade Cast Iron, the L 276 is specifically engineered to accommodate very large shaft diameters and transmit massive torque loads while protecting the drive train from the destructive effects of vibration and shock.
The L 276 offers a significant jump in power capacity over the 225/226 range. Performance is defined by the spider material:
| Specification | Synthetic Rubber (NBR) | Polyurethane (PU) | H-Trans / Hytrel |
| Rated Torque (Nm) | 531.0 | 796.5 | 1327.5 |
| Power @ 100 rpm (kW) | 5.56 | 8.34 | 13.90 |
| Max Speed (RPM) | 3,100 | 3,100 | 3,100 |
Outside Diameter (ØA): 157 mm (approx. 6.18")
Max Bore (D): 75 mm (approx. 2.95")
Overall Length (TL1): 200 mm
Hub Diameter (ØB): 124 mm
Length thru' Bore (L1): 79 mm
Gap (G): 4.5 mm
The L 276 operates on the principle of power transmission through compression:
The Interface: Two massive cast iron hubs are mounted to the shafts.
The Buffer: A heavy-duty elastomeric spider is sandwiched between the hub jaws.
Torque Transfer: As the drive motor turns, the jaws of the drive hub compress the spider legs against the driven hub's jaws.
Energy Absorption: The spider material absorbs peak torque spikes (such as those during motor startup) and dampens torsional vibrations.
Alignment Correction: Its flexible nature allows for the correction of parallel and angular misalignments that are common in large-scale machinery setups.
Exceptional Torque Capacity: Capable of handling over 1,300 Nm of torque, making it suitable for the most demanding industrial motors.
Large Shaft Compatibility: With a 75 mm maximum bore, it eliminates the need for shaft step-downs on large equipment.
Fail-Safe Design: The interlocking jaws ensure that if the spider fails under extreme conditions, the drive remains connected for an orderly shutdown.
Maintenance-Free: No lubrication or internal sealing is required, making it ideal for dusty or remote locations.
Durability: The cast iron construction provides high thermal stability and resistance to physical impact.
The L 276 is a staple in "heavy-iron" industries:
Mining & Extractive: Large rock crushers, mill drives, and heavy-duty conveyor head-pulleys.
Steel Mills: Rolling mill drives and heavy-duty processing lines.
Large Scale Pumping: Municipal water pumps and high-pressure sludge pumps.
Power Generation: Connecting large diesel or gas engines to high-capacity alternators.
Marine Propulsion: Small to mid-sized marine drive systems and auxiliary equipment.
The L 276 represents the upper end of the standard L-series jaw couplings. With an Outside Diameter of 157 mm and a 75 mm bore, it is built for massive strength and reliability. Whether you are dealing with high-horsepower electric motors or internal combustion engines, the L 276 provides the necessary "muscle" to transmit torque while ensuring your expensive bearings and shafts are protected from vibration and shock.
