The L 226 Jaw Coupling is a specialized heavy-duty model within the L-series family. While it shares the same torque characteristics as the L 225, it is designed with a larger hub and bore capacity to accommodate significantly thicker shafts. It consists of two heavy-duty Cast Iron hubs and a high-performance elastomeric spider. This model is the preferred choice for industrial drives where high power is required but the shaft diameter exceeds the limits of the L 225.
The L 226 is built for high-torque environments. The power ratings are dependent on the material of the spider insert used:
| Specification | Synthetic Rubber (NBR) | Polyurethane (PU) | H-Trans / Hytrel |
| Rated Torque (Nm) | 265.0 | 397.5 | 662.5 |
| Power @ 100 rpm (kW) | 2.8 | 4.2 | 6.9 |
| Max Speed (RPM) | 4,200 | 4,200 | 4,200 |
Outside Diameter (ØA): 136 mm
Max Bore (D): 70 mm
Overall Length (TL1): 153.2 mm
Hub Diameter (ØB): 115 mm
Length thru' Bore (L1): 64 mm
Gap (G): 3 mm
The L 226 functions as a flexible mechanical connector:
Shaft Connection: The two cast iron hubs are secured to the drive and driven shafts using standard keyways and set screws.
Torque Path: The rotation of the drive hub compresses the legs of the spider against the jaws of the driven hub, effectively transferring the load.
Misalignment Correction: The spider deforms slightly to absorb parallel, angular, and axial shaft misalignments, preventing stress on motor bearings.
Safety Interface: The "jaw" design is fail-safe; if the flexible element wears out, the metal jaws will interlock, allowing for a safe, controlled shutdown without losing the load instantly.
Superior Bore Capacity: Offers a 70 mm maximum bore, providing the largest shaft capability in this torque class.
Torsional Softness: The NBR or Polyurethane spiders absorb high-frequency vibrations, protecting sensitive electronics and mechanical gear.
Rugged Longevity: The cast iron hubs are designed for the harshest industrial conditions, including high heat and abrasive dust.
Maintenance-Free: No lubrication, oiling, or greasing is ever required.
Simplified Installation: The "drop-in" nature of the spider means it can be replaced without moving the heavy motor or driven equipment.
The L 226 is found in massive industrial installations:
Mining & Aggregates: Large vibrating screens, crushers, and heavy-duty conveyor pulleys.
Large Fluid Handling: High-capacity wastewater pumps and industrial cooling towers.
Steel Processing: Used in rollers and heavy-duty slitters where shaft diameters are large.
Paper Mills: Driven rolls and large agitators.
High-Power Motors: Connecting 50 HP+ electric motors to industrial fans and blowers.
The L 226 is the high-capacity alternative to the L 225. By offering a 136 mm outside diameter and a 70 mm bore, it allows engineers to transmit up to 662.5 Nm of torque on much larger shafts than standard couplings. It is the perfect balance of massive strength, fail-safe reliability, and vibration control for heavy industry.
