The L 190 Jaw Coupling (often designated as L190) is a high-torque, heavy-duty flexible shaft coupling designed for large-scale industrial machinery. Unlike the smaller sintered iron hubs in the L-series, the L 190 is typically manufactured from Cast Iron to handle significantly higher mechanical stresses. It uses a three-piece design—two hubs and one elastomeric spider—to transmit power while protecting equipment from shock and misalignment.
The L 190 is engineered for high-power applications. Ratings vary based on the spider material selected:
| Specification | Synthetic Rubber (NBR) | Polyurethane | H-Trans / Hytrel |
| Rated Torque (Nm) | 190.0 | 285.0 | 475.0 |
| Power @ 100 rpm (kW) | 2.0 | 3.0 | 5.0 |

Outside Diameter (ØA): 115 mm
Max Bore (D): 55 mm
Overall Length (TL1): 133 mm
Hub Diameter (ØB): 102 mm
Length thru' Bore (L1): 54 mm
Gap (G): 3 mm
Shaft Attachment: The cast iron hubs are mounted onto the drive and driven shafts, usually secured with a keyway and set screws.
Torque Transmission: As the driving hub rotates, its heavy-duty jaws press against the "arms" of the spider insert, which transfers the force to the driven hub.
Mechanical Damping: The elastomeric spider absorbs up to 95% of shock loads, preventing mechanical "hammering" from damaging the motor or gearbox bearings.
Safety Backup: Because it is a "fail-safe" coupling, if the spider is destroyed by overload, the metal jaws will eventually touch and continue to transmit torque, preventing a total system stall during critical operations.
Exceptional Durability: The cast iron construction is resistant to cracking and wear in heavy industrial environments.
Large Bore Capacity: Accommodates shafts up to 55 mm, making it suitable for high-horsepower electric motors and diesel engines.
Maintenance-Free: No lubrication is required, and the coupling is resistant to oil, dirt, sand, and moisture.
Economic Protection: Much cheaper to replace a worn spider than to repair a damaged shaft or motor bearing caused by rigid connections.
Easy Replacement: The design allows for quick inspection and replacement of the spider without moving the massive machinery it connects.
The L 190 is used in systems where downtime is costly and high torque is a requirement:
Heavy-Duty Industrial Pumps: Large-scale water treatment, irrigation, and fire pumps.
Mining & Quarrying: Used in crushers, grinders, and large rock conveyors.
Power Generation: Connecting high-output diesel or gas engines to electrical alternators.
Compressors: Large industrial rotary screw and reciprocating compressors.
Processing Plants: Agitators and mixers in the chemical and paper/pulp industries.
The L 190 is a powerhouse in the L-Series line. With a maximum torque capacity of 475 Nm (using H-Trans) and a wide 55 mm maximum bore, it provides the strength needed for heavy industrial drives. It combines the simplicity and cost-effectiveness of the jaw-style design with the ruggedness of cast iron construction, ensuring reliable performance in the most demanding environments.
